Artist Statement
I love the joy painting consistently brings to my life. I am a modern impressionist depicting semi-abstract fairytales and florals. My art is defined by rich pastels, layering texture, and miniature subjects in landscapes all affectionately wrapped in a layer of whimsy. My signature subjects are hot air flowers with tiny creatures hiding in their balloons.
My art practice has flourished in NYC. Photo walks in Prospect Park continually provide new inspiration, art stores have given me access to experiment with new mediums (discovered how to use pigments), and trips to the Met have enriched my art history. I find continual inspiration from the Met’s exhibit “Inspiring Walt Disney, The Animation of French Decorative Arts.” I seek out original Monet paintings in every major art museum I visit in my travels. I adore and have countless tabs on my favorite flowers in “The Book of Flowers” a 607 page publication by Taschen of Pierre-Joseph Redoute’s botanical illustrations. Since my three core influences are all French artists, it seemed appropriate to use atelier in my art studio’s name: Whimsical Wild Heart Atelier LLC.
For years, I have been creating mini canvases for my coworkers to bring them joy in roles that were high stress. Whenever someone needed encouragement or showed me kindness…I would drop a mini painting and easel at their desk. The impact a small piece of art can make is huge. My “Sparking Joy Mini Collection” is an extension of this practice, so others can feel encouraged as well.
A Midwinter Dream
At the turn of this year, God stirred my heart. For years friends have suggested I sell my art, but it never appealed to me. In winter 2023, two friends nudged again that I start an art business…and for the first time it resonated.
Over the years, the “spark of joy” paintings I have gifted my coworkers taught me the intrinsic value of art. The comfort of having a mini art (4”x4”) on your desk while working a fast paced high stress job.
